Is 'Made in ..." still important?

Most luxury brands rely on their heritage and history to add value to their products and to reassure customers that their money will be well spent. Italian houses like Hermes and Gucci consistently refer back to their roots as saddlemakers in the design and finish of their leather goods.

capturing fashion in pencils and inks

Being in awe of much of J P Gaultier's tribal punk French couture, and a little bit in love with Amelia's magazine, I thought it was time to answer one of her call outs for illustrators. Amelia travels to all sorts of events taking pictures as she goes, and invites illustrators and image makers to interpret these for her reports (she has some great contributors writing for her too).

Here's my response to the brief - in various kinds of pencil on heavy watercolour paper with ink wash and white gouache. I'm not sure if it's quite what I intended - the sequinned denim and chain mail were really hard to capture, and drawing from a small photo was tricky, but it was an interesting challenge. Feels really good to revisit my illustration roots. More to come!

How to ride pillion on a superbike

How to ride pillion on a superbike:

1 Ensure you are wearing windproof, close fitting, and preferably leather clothing

2 Allow the rider to help you on with your helmet or ‘lid’. Keep the visor up at this stage to facilitate conversation

3 Wait for by bystanders to finish engaging the rider in highly detailed discussion of the bike ( may take some time) Stand by graciously while he mounts the bike, revs the engine and draws admiring and or jealous glances

4 Ensure he is ‘flatfoot’ with boot feet on the ground and the bike is stable

5 Place your left foot on the pillion footpeg , your hands on the pillion seat and lightly vault onto the bike, swinging you right leg over and onto the other peg.

why glamour matters

The old saying “first impressions count” has never been truer in our image driven society. Our senses are under constant attack, from adverts, the media, and the sheer amount of cultural noise around us.

In order for us to take notice, this cacophony will have to be drowned out by something literally out of the ordinary.

Glamour, that hard to define quality that makes you stop in your tracks to take a second look, or decide to really ring back the morning after, will always do the trick.

Glamour can help you get what you deserve, whether that’s attention, a better lover, self confidence, a pay rise, a record deal, or your cause in the papers.

now more than ever

In 2008, CND will be 50 years old. During this time nuclear weapons have not made the world a safer place, and our governments continue to use and develop nuclear weapons whist condemning other nations for doing the same.

Having campaigned on environmental and peace issues for some time, I have noticed that although more people than ever are engaged and active there’s still such a long way to go. I have been thinking recently about how to raise cash and awareness. I have always found creativity to be a real success with the media on street protests, and am always interested in new ways to get the message across.

seraglia produce handmade jewellery to order at the top end of the market. They have made a couture necklace to promote peace and raise money for CND.
