vintage made do and mend
Hosted at 1940’s teahouse Time for Tea, this series of workshops explored vintage style through the wardrobe, personalities and performances of stars such as Mae West and Marilyn Monroe.
As a designer and trained singer and performer I was interested in how I could use these skills to make learning about vintage fashion and the art of remaking and mending clothing more engaging and fun. The costumes and vocal performances were satisfying to develop, and sustaining the characters though the evening was challenging too.
In partnership with costumier Helen Kathryn Astaire, we also offered:
• Top notch tips for repairs and mending
• On the spot demonstation of vintage sewing techniques
• Pattern & material exchange
• Perusing of the vintage style library and inspiring film books
• Specially selected images and film clips showing key wardrobe peices
• Exploration and discussion of the materials and techniques used.
I’ve also hosted other narrative make & mend events with Annie Sherburne’s Eco Caravan, House of Fairytales and TRAID.
